World mines about 139 million carats (about 26,000 kg) of diamonds every year amounting to a value of around 9 billion US Dollars. Africa is the world's largest producer of diamonds, accounting for more than 50% of world's diamond production. The regions in Africa that produce maximum diamonds are Angola, Botswana and South Africa. Angola is also famous for its Civil War – Diamonds and the blood diamonds or conflict diamonds. Majority of the diamond mines are centered around South Central Africa in the countries such as Tanzania, South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Congo, Ghana and Namibia.

Some of the world's major diamond mines in Africa: Angola – Catoca Diamond Mine, Fucauma Diamond Mine, Luarcia Diamond Mine, Endiama National Diamond Mining Company; Botswana – Debswana (De Beers and Botswana Govt joint company), Orapa Diamond Mine, Damtshaa Diamond Wines; South Africa – Baken Diamond Mine, Venetia Diamond Mine, Kimberley Diamond Mine, Finsch Diamond Mine; Zimbabwe – Murowa Diamond Mine; Tanzania – Williamson Diamond Mine; Lesotho – Letseng Diamond Mine.
